Monthly Meeting - 'There is incredible value in being of service to others”'

Monthly Meeting 10.09.2024

Anne rang the school bell and gave a warm welcome to a very busy hall - it was lovely to see every seat taken for the first meeting of the new session

Anne went over the business, going over what we had been doing over the last few months - World Textile Day, Area lunch, Evelyn Baxter Class, Stewarding at the Quadrathlon and finishing off with the Afternoon Tea at the Courtyard Cafe - phew!........a busy summer. We also have lots to look forward to: Stewarding at the Glencoe Marathon, Foraging at Cardross, Air Fryer Demo at Lakeland and of course our monthly meetings.

The meeting was then handed over to Col. Charles Wallace - secretary of the Kings Body Guard for Scotland. The Royal Company of Archers. Charles went on to tell us about the history of the Company of Archers accompanied by an excellent PowerPoint.

The Royal Company of Archers serves as the King’s Body Guard for Scotland. This ceremonial unit has been performing this role since 1822 when it was appointed by King George IV. The Royal Company of Archers is based in Edinburgh and participates in various state and ceremonial occasions in Scotland. The company was originally founded in 1676 to promote archery and received its Royal Charter from Queen Anne in 1704. Archery remains a key activity for the company, and they still carry longbows during ceremonial duties. The Royal Company undertakes duties at the request of The King at any State and ceremonial occasion in Scotland and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. The most regular duty is to be in attendance at His Majesty’s annual Garden Party at the Palace of Holyrood house in Edinburgh.

It was a most interesting talk and Ruskie would like to thank Charles for taking the time to come and tell us the story of the Kings Body Guard for Scotland
