2020 has had two key characteristics – the uncertainty of covid … and the certainty of friendship at Ruskie Rural. Tonight was no exception! We had hoped to get together to enjoy a Christmas meal, but ended up meeting on Zoom … we also wanted to make sure we shared the Ruskie Christmas spirit, and we definitely did that!
Anne Artis welcomed members and close friends to our first Christmas ‘night-in’ – with members showcasing Christmas trees, lights and festive accessories. After encouraging members to submit their Warnock Trophy Limerick Anne began to conduct the Ruskie “Orchestra”! The crackers in our goody bags contained numbered whistles (in addition to the usual bang, hat and terrible joke!) and using the song sheet we tried to toot our way through the sound track to our evening … but with not enough puff, and far too much hilarity, we ended up simply singing Jingle Bells and Good King Wenceslas instead. Christmas bingo followed … not so much ‘two little ducks’ but more ‘turkey and partridge’! Congratulations to our winners – your prize will be along shortly!
Our final entertainment for the meeting was poetry with Lesley Gentles (our most geographically distant member who thankfully can join online) reading her newest poem “Ruskie Christmas 2020” (the full poem is available to download) plus a poem from Mary Muirhead followed by limericks from Libby, Jean and Fiona along with memorable Christmas reminisces from the members.
A final rendition of ‘The First Noel’ using the whistles proved once and for all that we were either on ‘mute’ (thank you Fiona!) or that only the dogs could hear us! Truly hysterical!
Anne closed the meeting with a Christmas wish that we can meet again in the hall in 2021 in the ‘new normal’ and reminded us that our next meeting in January will be a professional musical evening. Merry Christmas everyone!
