“The bike is a curious vehicle, its passenger is its engine"
Tuesday 8 May 2018
Anne Artis, current president, welcomed members and guests to the final meeting of the 2017-18 year and introduced the business of the AGM evening, including her own brief reminder of the fun we have had, along with Christine Bauer, Treasurer, sharing the successes in this financial year. The votes for the new committee have been counted and announced, appointments will be published in due course. Our thanks go to the tellers from Dunblane (we will return the favour tomorrow night).
Our speaker for the evening was Marianne Scott from Cycling Scotland who encouraged us all to get on our bikes, and shared the ways in which Cycling Scotland and it’s support network can support us and provide free training. We were intrigued to find out how limited the legislation is for cyclists – there is no legal requirement for helmets or training or insurance (although all of these are recommended); and it was a surprise to be reminded that the Highway Code permits cyclists to ride 2 abreast on any road! Notwithstanding any of this Marianne encourages common sense and courtesy on the part of both cyclists and motorists. Her enthusiasm for the activity has resulted in Ruskie members promising to get our bikes fit for the road … and to participate in a “try-a-bike” event including electric and folding bicycles (these are not the same thing!) … watch this space!!
A delicious and varied tea was provided by Isobel McGuire, Janice Oman and Heather Millar
