'How to Make an Omelette'

'How to Make an Omelette'

TUESDAY 9 APRIL 2019

The blossom tree at the hall was in full bloom as Anne Artis warmly welcomed members and friends - spring is in the air but we still lit the Ruskie fire! After hearing about the wide range of activities and events which are coming up in the next few months, and trips for the future, Anne introduced our speaker Chris Duffy of the Auchtermuchty Food Museum. Chris shared with us the story of his introduction to cooking in his early life (“2 choices, take it or leave it!”) explaining how and why he bought his first cookbook and the interest that developed and led to the acquisitions that now make up the Museum collection. Chris played a recording of Marcel Boulestin from 1932 of “How to Make an Omelette” explaining what an omelette is and what it is not, before taking us on a whirlwind journey of his family (baking cakes with added “fag ash”, or making sandwich flags for fun) and his progress from buying cookbooks to hoarding them! We learned of the range of items in the museum from Imperial Chinese Chopsticks to a rare book of how to make chicken soup while naked! Chris shared his excitement about the detail of lithography printing, and also encouraged us to try flamingo for Sunday lunch (if not available, then substitute parrot…) The stories of Hollywood stars, notorious criminals and renowned celebrity chefs entertained and engaged the Ruskie audience before Chris successfully cooked along with Marcel’s instructions to demonstrate how to create our own omelette. We were encouraged to look through the books and artefacts Chris had brought from the museum, and invited to join him on his next experience – “The Table of the Last Tsar”.

A delicious supper (and take away boxes!) was provided by Sheenagh Beaton, Pamela Deans and Janice Oman
